Training interventionists and teachers to better support our unique learners

Reach OG Training

Reach Learning Centre is proud to be the leading provider of accredited OG training in Canada. Our OG training courses have been subject to rigorous peer review by both the Canadian and American OG professional academies (OG Canada and OGA) and align with standards set out for the training of dyslexia specialists by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), the National Reading Panel, as well as requirements by provincial Ministries of Education (OGCE). Our courses are fully accredited for applicants seeking certification in Canada with OGC.

Introduction to Reach OG Training

The OG training curricula delivered through REACH OG Learning Centres has been developed by our Executive Director, Corey Zylstra, M.Ed. Corey is recognized and accredited as an Orton-Gillingham Master Trainer for the Canadian Orton-Gillingham Academy (MT/OG Canada), an Honorary Fellow of the American OG Academy (HF/OGA) and as a Certified Dyslexia Therapist through the International Dyslexia Association - Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CDT/IDA-CERI).

We offer training for hundreds of teachers each year in multiple locations in Canada and in several countries around the world. We work with schools, districts and universities to ensure quality, professional, accredited OG training.

To become an Orton-Gillingham Practitioner, enabling support for students in a 1:1 setting, OGP applicants must complete Foundations of MSLE and OG Practitioner coursework, followed by the OG Practitioner Practicum. After successful completion of the practicum, the trainee would be eligible to apply to OG Canada (formerly called CATT, OG) for certification as an OG Practitioner-Interim and begin working in the field. Note that trainees must complete all basic training listed above in order to qualify as an OG Practitioner.

To become trained as an Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator, providing support in classrooms and learning assistance centres in schools, OGCE applicants must hold a teaching degree and complete Foundations of MSLE followed by OG Classroom Educator. Successful OGCEs would then be eligible to apply for OGCE credentials.

Foundations of MSLE

Foundations of Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSL) is an introductory course to Orton-Gillingham/Structured Literacy education and training. This 30 hour training course has been designed to prepare educators for either clinical training in the Orton-Gillingham approach (OGP) or Orton-Gillingham training for classroom teachers (OGCE). Approved by the accrediting body OG Canada (formerly CATT-OG) as approved foundational training, the course also serves as an important link to current research for Orton-Gillingham Practitioners currently in practice. This course is now presented as a hybrid course with some content delivered through webinars prior to two days of onsite training. Course completion assignments will be conducted through our online platform.

*Completion of this training meets eligibility requirements for Supporter level membership with OG Canada.

OG Classroom Educator

Using the Orton-Gillingham approach and rationale for teaching, join our certified OG Trainers to learn how to implement the OG approach in a classroom or small group setting such as a Learning Assistance/Resource centre or primary classroom. This course will investigate OG classroom procedures for providing structured, sequential, multisensory language and phonics instruction in a classroom setting, including procedures for RTI implementation and progress monitoring.  Provide instruction in reading and spelling that allows your students to be “Detectives” of the language and learn the code for mastering phonology, orthography, and syllabication. Strategies for penmanship/letter formations, sight word teaching, alphabet sequencing, sound/symbol relationships, spelling rules, and syllables will be examined and practiced. Specific strategies for explicit reading and spelling instruction will be examined and practiced. Lesson planning and delivery of practice lessons are an important component of this course. This is a 60 hour course provided over 5 or 6 synchronous classroom sessions and online asynchronous coursework.

Bridge to OG Practitioner

The Bridge to OGP course provides an opportunity for teachers who have completed OGCE coursework to extend their knowledge to become an OG Practitioner, enabling intervention support in a one-on-one/tier 3 intervention setting.

Join us for this targeted coursework, allowing educators to be qualified to enrol and complete a supervised OGP practicum and become a specialized, credentialed interventionist and Orton-Gillingham Practitioner.

OG Practitioner

Orton-Gillingham Practitioner training at REACH includes over 60 additional training hours beyond Foundations coursework, designed to prepare educators to begin providing clinical support in a 1 on 1 environment using the Orton-Gillingham approach. This is fully accredited coursework and thus includes assignments and testing for course completion. A pre-study package will be sent prior to the coursework and includes about 20 hours of readings and material preparations. Online support content helps trainees access study aids and materials throughout their coursework. Our training course has been peer-reviewed and meets the rigorous criteria set out by several national and international organizations (OG Canada, OGA, IDA/CERI, etc). Reach is the leading provider of accredited OG coursework in several countries.

OG Practitioner Practicum

Completion of a supervised practicum is not only a requirement for professional certification but is also a crucial element in the learning process for OG Practitioner Trainees to best support students with learning difficulties. Providing opportunity to carefully practice procedures and lesson plan implementation learned in the REACH OGP coursework, our newly revised and extensive practicum program includes an asynchronous Practicum Companion Course (PCC) to support Trainees. The PCC provides careful guidance through the assignments, many videos to revisit ideas and procedures, example rubrics outlining grading and assignments, and a huge bank of downloadable lesson plans and lesson teaching resources as trainees work through their OGP-Practicum.
